Rv boondocking utah12/9/2023 Muley Point Overlook is a must-stop destination if you’re traveling near Mexican Hat or the Four Corners. Watch the sunset – but make sure to wake up early to watch the sunrise as well. The incomparable views are well worth the journey. The drop off is steep, sudden, and a long way down. You’ll likely need to stake down your tent with something other than tent stakes. If privacy is your top priority, look for a site away from the rim (on the opposite side of Muley Point Road).Ĭamping here is often windy as all get and most of the ground is hard stone. But there’s still a lot of room to spread out and find something private, especially if you drive further in. Muley Point, like almost all Utah dispersed campsites, is very popular now. Expect moderate washboarding but nothing too severe. The access road is unpaved, yet frequently graded. Highway 261 is paved until you reach the Muley Point Road turn off (just before the dugway). I’d avoid this route in an RV or pulling a trailer.Īrriving from the north is better suited for RVs and trailers. From the south, you’ll make the climb up the steep (11% grade) and switchback-heavy Moki Dugway, a usually well-graded dirt road cut into the side of the cliff. On a clear day, you can even see Monument Valley in the distance. The campsites with the best views are perched high on a cliff at the southern end of Cedar Mesa with panoramic views of the desert below, including the San Juan River winding through a deep canyon. In fact, this very well might just be one of the best free campsites in the country, especially if you’re after breathtaking views. ![]() Steve found a candle and we sang Happy birthday to Deb for her birthday under the big sky.Free camping in Utah honestly doesn’t get much better than Muley Point. Plus with all that fabulous Utah sun we were making more power than we were using! Thankfully the pot roast was a big hit and I even had some Ghirardelli brownie mix for desert. Once it starts counting down I turn off the generator and run the rest on our batteries, because while the Instant Pot is a high wattage device, once it’s at pressure it doesn’t use the high wattage continuously, it cycles on and off, so it doesn’t completely kill the batteries. What I have found while boondocking is I have to run the generator until the Instant Pot comes to pressure. Because we were boondocking and I was using the Instant Pot I needed to stay with the rig, so we all took a day to chill and folks did their own thing until dinner time. ![]() Ultimately we decided Sunday would be the best day based on weather, so I took Saturday to make a pot roast dinner for Deb. We knew we were staying Saturday and Sunday and weren’t sure which day to do the hike. I stink at taking night photos but managed to get this shot through the cave opening. Goblin Valley is one of the darkest places in the US. But that’s personal preference, it’s pretty wide open and there are lots of places to go. In retrospect after exploring the area, I would actually recommend going father on the paved road rather than turning off on the first dirt road. Once we were on that road we kept going until we found a spot that would work for us. Ultimately we just started driving down the road out of Goblin Valley and turned left at the first dirt route after the sign that tells you you have left the state park. We also needed a spot that was big enough for three rigs, and relatively flat, which was a little more challenging. Yes, there are tons and tons of spots in the area, but there were also a surprising number of people boondocking. In Deb’s case that is definitely hiking and the Wild Horse Canyon hike seemed perfect.įirst we had to find a place and that turned out to be a little more challenging than expected. ![]() Cook a nice meal and plan an excursion that works with your friend’s interests. It’s pretty easy to make a birthday special on the road. Over the years we have been really lucky to celebrate birthdays with our friends and although we rarely plan to be together during those times, it often turns out we are. ![]() We also learned there was a long hike in a canyon close by, which seemed like the perfect thing to do for Deb’s birthday. Thankfully Lee learned that there are VAST amounts of BLM land surrounding the State park and we could boondock anywhere we wanted. We had so much fun at Goblin Valley that we definitely didn’t want to leave the area, but we also knew we wouldn’t be able to extend our stay in the campground.
